The
purpose of THE
BODY IMAGE KITS is to facilitate
interactive discussion within the
classroom. These discussions, which
support universal learning outcomes
for Health, will provide an opportunity
to identify and discuss the multitude
of factors that influence body image
within our culture.
Our
activities provide an opportunity
to share information with participants
at a critical time in the formation
of body image. Simultaneously, once
an issue surfaces, instructors can
provide information and dispel myths
in a developmentally appropriate manner.
The use of THE
BODY IMAGE KITS, provides
a number of additional benefits to
the instructor:
It
provides a unique resource that engages
participants in active learning.
The
individual instructor sets the pace.
For example, if there is a particular
concept that requires reinforcement,
there is an opportunity to use this
kit as a springboard for further activities
or discussion.
An
instructor can also guide their students'
journey through the activity by selecting
objects that represent only the concepts
they want to address at that time
or in that grade level.
The
approach instructors utilize with
the kit is a matter of personal preference.
For example, the instructor may pose
questions to the group collectively
or to smaller groups of participants.
THE
BODY IMAGE KITS becomes
a vehicle to facilitate the development
of critical thinking skills and problem-solving
abilities in participants.
We are pleased to provide THE
BODY IMAGE KITS at four
different levels. Each level addresses
body image in its broadest sense by
focusing on behaviors and attitudes
that support wellness. Further, each
kit addresses issues such as the influences
that shape body image, discrimination
based on appearance and self-acceptance;
all in developmentally appropriate
and creative ways. Easy to follow
lesson plans (which include objectives)
guide participants through numerous
interactive lessons which encourage
individual thought and learning experience.
This Canadian-made resource is designed
to support health curriculums that
recognize the significance of healthy
body image, e.g. Canada, the United
States, England, and Australia to
name a few. The four levels currently
available are described below.
