Confident for Life Video:
Body Image Works, Inc. is pleased to announce that we have located an excellent new resource for grades 4-6. It is called Confident for Life: Kids and Body Image and is an outstanding, age appropriate video. We are thrilled to have found such a high caliber video. We are even more excited to have established a working relationship with Disney in that they have agreed to edit the video to support the wellness model that Alberta promotes and supports.

We have successfully negotiated with Disney to edit and remove a segment on anorexia and inappropriate exercise. After multiple previews of the video and consultation with colleagues in both the eating disorder field as well as local school districts, we went to the distributor with the proposed edits. We are delighted to be able to include this video (edited version) in our new grade 4-6 kits and are selling the video/lesson plan separately (not as part of a kit) for $80.00 plus GST and S&H. This is a great deal as it is the same price as offered directly through the video company but we are including a lesson plan and worksheet as well.

Full Mouse Empty Mouse Storybook & Companion Guides:
Two related trends are causing concern: childhood obesity and normal-weight children who feel fat and diet, raising their risk of developing eating disorders. Given the increase in these behaviors, it is never too early for prevention. Children as young as 5 are teased about weight, express concern about their body size, and worry about eating "bad" foods. Such beliefs can sow the seeds for later disordered eating.

These issues can be addressed by helping children listen to their bodies. The children's book, Full Mouse, Empty Mouse (FMEM), written by Dr. Dina Zeckhausen, tells the story of a boy mouse who copes with stress by over-eating and a girl mouse who deals with stress by under-eating.

Body Image Works, Inc. is pleased to endorse this story. It has the potential to help children manage stress, respect their bodies, understand normal developmental changes, and become more accepting of the idea that people come in all shapes and sizes. Body Image Works, Inc. has revised the companion piece to FMEM to make it relevant for parents.

We hope this resource will help homes become a healthier environment when it comes to the complex issues surrounding food and body image.
